Pool Deck That Finishes the Backyard
A well-poured pool deck creates clean circulation around the pool, improves the backyard's overall presentation, and handles the conditions of poolside use — bare feet, water exposure, sun, and furniture. Getting slope and surface right from the start matters more than most people expect until they deal with a deck that drains poorly, scales after the first winter, or feels slippery when wet.

New pool installation
When a new in-ground pool is installed, the deck is poured as part of the project or immediately after the pool shell and coping are complete.
Replacing a deteriorated deck
Pool decks absorb significant chemical and UV exposure over time. When scaling, cracking, or settling becomes a safety or aesthetic issue, replacement is typically the right answer.
Expanding deck coverage
Adding deck space on sides of the pool that weren't originally covered, or extending to connect with adjacent patio areas.
Improving drainage and slope
Decks that hold water poolside create slip hazards and accelerate deterioration. Correcting the slope during replacement solves the problem permanently.
What Matters on Every Pool Decks Project
Slip-resistant surface
Bare feet on wet concrete around a pool need adequate texture. Broom finish, exposed aggregate, and certain stamped finishes provide traction. Smooth or polished surfaces are not appropriate for pool decks.
Slope for drainage
Pool decks need to drain away from the pool edge, not toward it. Typically 1/8" to 1/4" per foot slope away from the pool. Poor slope creates standing water and slip hazards.
Pool chemical exposure
Chlorine and pool chemicals that splash onto the deck surface accelerate scaling on concrete that hasn't been properly cured and sealed. Mix design and sealing both matter.
Expansion joints around the pool
The pool shell moves independently from the deck. Properly placed expansion joints between the coping and deck prevent the deck from cracking as the shell expands and contracts.
Local Conditions That Affect This Work
Kansas City's clay soil, freeze-thaw cycles, and drainage patterns affect how this type of work should be specified and installed.
KC summers and UV exposure
Kansas City summers are hot and sunny. Lighter finishes reduce heat retention at the deck surface — a consideration on south-facing or fully exposed decks.
Freeze-thaw and winter exposure
Pool decks are exposed to precipitation through fall and winter. Properly cured and sealed concrete with adequate air entrainment handles KC freeze-thaw better than uncured or unsealed surfaces.

Pool Decks Questions
Common questions about this service, timeline, specifications, and how we work.
View All FAQsWhat's the best concrete finish for a pool deck?
Broom finish is the most common and provides reliable traction for wet bare feet. Exposed aggregate and certain stamped patterns also work well. Smooth or polished finishes aren't recommended for poolside surfaces. We discuss finish options during the site visit.
How thick should a pool deck be?
Standard pool decks are 4 inches thick. Areas with heavy outdoor furniture, pergola footings, or other concentrated loads may warrant 5 inches. Thickness is specified in the written scope.
Do you handle the transition from pool coping to deck?
Yes. The coping-to-deck transition is part of every pool deck scope. We plan forming and joint placement to allow independent movement between the pool shell and the deck.
How do you handle drainage on a pool deck?
We plan drainage slope as part of the site review and forming. Pool decks should drain away from the pool edge toward yard drainage, not toward the house or pool equipment.
Can a pool deck be replaced without redoing the pool itself?
Yes. Pool deck replacement is a standalone project if the pool shell and coping are in good condition. We assess the interface between coping and deck during the site visit.
